Severe Head Itching: What to Know

Dryness and asteatotic eczema can leave the scalp tight, flaky, and itchy. Atopic dermatitis may cause an itchy, sensitive scalp alongside eczema elsewhere. Contact dermatitis can begin after a new shampoo, dye, fragrance, oil, or styling product and may cause redness, burning, swelling, or weeping.

Psoriasis often produces thicker scale with a defined edge and may extend beyond the hairline. Lichen planus can cause inflammation and hair changes that need prompt assessment. Scabies may cause intense itching with bumps and household spread, while a yeast-related skin infection may cause irritated, moist areas.

Pause newly introduced hair products and keep a note of what touches the scalp. Wash gently with lukewarm water, avoid scratching and vigorous brushing, and keep nails short to reduce skin damage. Do not share combs, hats, towels, or pillows if an infection or infestation is possible.

A clinician can inspect scale, redness, bumps, crusting, and hair loss, then choose treatment such as a suitable anti-inflammatory, antifungal, or anti-infestation medicine. Avoid applying multiple medicated products at once because this can obscure the pattern and further irritate the skin.

Seek prompt care for pus, spreading redness, warmth, severe tenderness, thick crusts, new bald patches, or itching that is preventing sleep. Get urgent help for facial or eye swelling, breathing difficulty, fever with a rapidly worsening rash, or blistering skin.
