Short answer

Severe cheilitis is marked inflammation of the lips that may cause cracking, soreness, swelling, peeling, or oozing and needs attention when it persists.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common symptoms
Soreness, dryness, peeling, swelling, cracks, or crusting
First step
Remove suspected irritants and use a bland protective ointment
Urgent warning
Lip or tongue swelling with breathing difficulty

What can cause it

Cheilitis is an umbrella term rather than one single disease. Irritation from lip licking, saliva, wind, dry air, fragranced products, or harsh cosmetics can damage the barrier. Contact allergy to flavourings, preservatives, metals, or ingredients in lip products may create repeated inflammation. Yeast or bacterial involvement is more likely when the corners split, stay moist, or develop crusting. A clinician may also consider eczema, medication effects, nutritional problems, or a persistent sun-related change.

Practical care and treatment

Stop new or fragranced lip products and avoid licking, biting, picking, and peeling flakes. Apply a bland protective ointment regularly, especially after eating and before sleep; Emollient Therapy can help restore the barrier. Drink normally and protect the lips from sun and wind. A clinician may recommend Topical Corticosteroids for selected inflammatory patterns, or another treatment if infection or allergy is suspected. Do not share creams or use a steroid product inside the mouth without specific instructions. Persistent cheilitis needs a diagnosis because repeated moisturising alone may not remove the trigger.

When to seek care

Arrange medical review if cracks bleed repeatedly, symptoms interfere with eating or speaking, or the lips do not settle after avoiding obvious irritants. Seek urgent help for rapidly increasing swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing, widespread hives, or feeling faint. Prompt assessment is also needed for pus, spreading redness, fever, a persistent ulcer, or a one-sided scaly patch that does not heal.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pattern suggests irritation, allergy, infection, eczema, or sun damage; which products to stop; whether testing is useful; and how long prescribed treatment should be used. Mention toothpaste, cosmetics, dental materials, medicines, habits, and symptoms at the mouth corners.

Questions people ask

Can licking the lips cause severe cheilitis?

Yes. Repeated saliva exposure and drying can weaken the lip barrier and keep irritation going.

When should cheilitis be checked?

Arrange review when it persists, recurs, bleeds, affects eating, or develops pus, an ulcer, or a non-healing scaly patch.
