Severe ADHD symptoms: what to know

Short answer
Severe ADHD symptoms are persistent attention, activity or impulse-control difficulties that significantly interfere with daily life.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Recognising the pattern
Examples include starting tasks but not finishing them, overlooking details, losing belongings, feeling unable to stay still, speaking or acting before thinking, and finding transitions unusually difficult. Emotional frustration can be intense, but it does not by itself establish ADHD. Clinicians look at whether symptoms began earlier in life, occur in more than one setting, and cause clear impairment. Poor sleep, anxiety, depression, stress, medication effects or learning differences can produce similar experiences.
What to do next
Write down concrete examples from home, study or work, including what happens before and after a difficulty. Arrange an assessment with a qualified clinician and share relevant developmental, medical and mental-health history. Until then, use one written task list, alarms, visible storage, short work periods and a quiet setting when possible. Support may include behavioural strategies, environmental adjustments, talking therapies, coaching or prescribed medication, selected after an individual review.
When symptoms need urgent attention
Seek prompt help when symptoms lead to dangerous driving, unsafe substance use, repeated serious accidents, inability to manage essential care, or a sudden major change from your usual pattern. Emergency help is needed for suicidal thoughts, serious self-harm, hallucinations, or immediate danger to anyone. Sudden confusion is not typical ADHD and needs urgent assessment.
Useful questions
Ask which symptoms meet diagnostic criteria, what other explanations should be checked, how impairment will be measured, and which supports fit your home or work setting. Ask how any treatment will be reviewed and what changes should prompt contact.

Questions people ask
Are severe ADHD symptoms the same for everyone?
No. Some people are mainly affected by inattention, others by hyperactivity or impulsivity, and many experience a combination.
Can symptoms suddenly start in adulthood?
A new adult problem deserves assessment for sleep, mood, physical health, stress or substances rather than being assumed to be ADHD.
