What does Sever's disease mean in children?

The condition is also called calcaneal apophysitis. It affects the growth area at the back of the heel, where the Achilles tendon attaches. During growth, this area can become sensitive when running, jumping, or playing puts repeated pulling force through the heel. A child may limp, complain of pain after sport, or feel tenderness when the heel is squeezed. Symptoms can affect one or both heels and may settle when activity is reduced.

Reduce activities that clearly trigger pain for a short period, while keeping gentle movement that feels comfortable. Supportive shoes, a cushioned heel, and avoiding barefoot walking on hard floors may reduce loading. A clinician can check the foot, ankle, walking pattern, and other possible causes of heel pain. Treatment may include stretching the calf, strengthening the lower leg, and a gradual return to sport.

Arrange an assessment if pain keeps returning, limits walking, causes a persistent limp, or does not improve with activity adjustment. Seek prompt care after a fall or direct blow, or if the heel is swollen, red, unusually warm, numb, or painful at rest. A clinician should also assess fever or feeling unwell alongside heel pain.
