What should you know about serotonin and depression?

How the structures involved in Depression differ from normal

Short answer

Serotonin is involved in mood, sleep, appetite and concentration, but depression cannot be explained by serotonin levels alone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Serotonin
A chemical messenger involved in mood, sleep and appetite.
Depression
A complex condition that cannot be reduced to one chemical.

What serotonin has to do with depression

Serotonin is a chemical messenger that helps nerve cells communicate. It also participates in sleep-wake regulation, appetite, emotional processing and attention. Depression can involve changes in these systems, along with other brain messengers, inherited vulnerability, stress, medical conditions and painful experiences.

Medicines used for depression may alter chemical signalling over time, but a response is not proof that serotonin was the sole cause. Symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, feeling anxious, difficulty concentrating or changes in sleep can occur with depression and with other conditions.

Practical next steps

Arrange a clinical assessment if low mood, loss of interest, sleep change or reduced concentration is affecting daily life. A clinician can ask about symptoms, medicines, alcohol or drug use, physical health and safety, then discuss talking therapy, medication, lifestyle support or a combination.

Do not start, stop or change an antidepressant without medical guidance. Take prescribed medicine as directed and report troublesome effects, worsening mood or new agitation. Regular sleep and wake times, gentle activity, supportive contact and manageable routines can provide useful structure while treatment is reviewed.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help now if you may harm yourself, cannot stay safe, or have severe confusion, extreme agitation or unusual experiences such as hearing or seeing things others do not. Contact emergency services in your area or go to the nearest emergency department.

Arrange prompt medical care when symptoms are rapidly worsening, you cannot manage basic needs, or you have concerning medication effects. Depression can be treated, and an assessment helps separate it from sleep problems, physical illness and other mental health conditions.

Questions for your doctor

Could another health problem or medicine be contributing to my symptoms? Which treatment options fit my symptoms and preferences? How long should I allow before reviewing a treatment, and which warning signs should prompt earlier contact?

Questions people ask

Can a serotonin test diagnose depression?

A routine serotonin measurement does not by itself diagnose depression; diagnosis is based on symptoms, history and clinical assessment.

Should I stop an antidepressant if I feel better?

No. Discuss any change with the prescriber, because stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms or a return of depression.
