Fever is a body-temperature response that can happen with many infections, from a common cold to conditions such as cellulitis or acute bronchitis. Sepsis is different: it is a harmful, whole-body response to infection that may disturb blood flow, breathing or organ function.

Call emergency services for confusion, difficulty waking, severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, cold or mottled skin, a seizure, or rapidly worsening weakness. Seek urgent help for fever with a stiff neck, a spreading painful rash, persistent vomiting or inability to drink.
