Sensitive skin under the armpit

Underarm skin is warm, moist and repeatedly exposed to rubbing from movement and clothing. Deodorant or antiperspirant fragrance, preservatives and other ingredients can cause contact irritation or allergy. Shaving may add tiny surface injuries, while yeast or bacterial overgrowth can contribute to a persistent rash. Itching and redness can occur with [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/), but underarm sensitivity does not by itself identify that condition. Rinse gently with lukewarm water, use a mild fragrance-free cleanser if needed and pat the fold dry. Pause deodorant, perfume and new shaving products while the rash settles; reintroduce only one item at a time. Wear breathable clothing, change after sweating and avoid tight seams. Do not scrub, scratch or apply household remedies. If you shave, wait until the skin is calm and use a clean razor with light strokes. A clinician can distinguish irritation from conditions such as [Perioral Dermatitis](/conditions/perioral-dermatitis/) or another fold rash.

Arrange a medical review if the rash lasts, returns after stopping a product, spreads beyond the fold, smells unusual or causes cracks and ongoing soreness. Get prompt help for rapidly increasing warmth, swelling, pus, severe pain, fever, red streaks or facial swelling with breathing trouble. Avoid using steroid, antifungal or antibiotic creams without guidance because similar-looking rashes need different treatment.
