What should you know about seminoma stage?

Doctors assess the original tumour, nearby lymph nodes, and any evidence of spread to more distant areas. They use the physical examination, scans, pathology, and tumour-marker blood tests together. A stage can therefore be assigned only after the relevant information has been reviewed; a scan or single report may not answer every part of the question.

The stage helps distinguish disease confined to the testicle from disease involving lymph nodes or other areas. It is a planning tool, not a description of how you feel day to day. Your team may also explain a risk group or marker category, which adds detail to the stage.

Ask which results are already available and which tests are still needed. Write down the stage exactly as given and ask what it means for surveillance, surgery, or medicine. Tumour Removal Surgery may be discussed when the primary tumour needs removal, while Chemotherapy may be considered when treatment beyond surgery is appropriate.

Tell the team about fertility plans, other medicines, and previous health conditions before treatment begins. Ask how follow-up visits will monitor you, which symptoms should be reported, and who to contact between appointments.

Contact your care team promptly for new or worsening pain, increasing swelling, fever, vomiting that prevents fluids, or a wound that becomes red or drains. Get urgent medical help for sudden severe pain, fainting, trouble breathing, marked weakness, or confusion. Staging does not replace assessment of new symptoms.

Ask: What is my stage and what findings support it? Are lymph nodes involved? Are tumour markers changing the stage or risk discussion? Do I need another scan? What are the surveillance and treatment choices? How will follow-up be organised, and what would prompt a change in plan?
