What should you know about Selsun Blue for cradle cap?

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, usually appears as greasy or dry scale on a baby’s scalp. The skin may look yellow, white, or mildly red. It is different from an adult’s dandruff routine, and an infant’s scalp can react more readily to medicated ingredients.

Scale that is widespread, very red, weeping, swollen, foul-smelling, or associated with marked discomfort may not be simple cradle cap. A clinician can check for infection, eczema, or another rash before recommending treatment.

Wash the scalp gently with a mild baby cleanser. If your clinician agrees, a small amount of plain emollient can soften scale before washing; loosened flakes should slide away with gentle brushing rather than scraping or picking. Keep products out of the eyes and stop if the skin becomes more inflamed.

Emollient Therapy may be suggested for persistent scale. A clinician may consider Topical Antifungal Treatment when the appearance and examination support that option. Never borrow an adult product or estimate an infant dose from its label.

Arrange a pediatric or dermatology review for spreading redness, cracking, bleeding, pus, fever, swelling, significant tenderness, or a rash involving the face or body. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a rapidly developing reaction after a product.
