What should you know about secondary insomnia?

Short answer

Secondary insomnia is difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or waking too early because another condition, stressor, medicine or sleep disruption is affecting sleep.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What secondary insomnia means

The word secondary describes a sleep problem that occurs alongside another trigger rather than appearing on its own. Pain, mood changes, Burnout, Depression, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, travel across time zones, medicines, alcohol, caffeine or an inconsistent schedule can interfere with the body’s sleep signals. Poor sleep may then lead to daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, irritability and reduced coping. These effects can reinforce worry about sleep, making the pattern harder to break. The trigger may be temporary, but persistent symptoms deserve a review.

What to do next

Note your sleep and wake times, awakenings, naps, substances, medicines and daytime symptoms for several days. Keep a regular wake time, use the bed for sleep rather than prolonged wakefulness, and make the bedroom quiet, dark and comfortably cool. Reduce stimulating drinks late in the day and allow a wind-down period before bed. A clinician can assess the possible trigger, review medicines and discuss structured insomnia treatment. When to seek care

Arrange medical advice when sleep difficulty is persistent, repeatedly affects daytime function, or follows a new medicine or significant mood change. Seek urgent help if severe sleep loss occurs with confusion, unsafe behaviour, thoughts of self-harm, or symptoms suggesting a serious mental health crisis. Do not drive or operate machinery when daytime sleepiness makes you struggle to stay alert.
