What should you know about second surgical opinion?

The surgeon considers your examination, imaging, biopsy or pathology report, other illnesses and the goal of treatment. They may agree that surgery is appropriate, recommend a different operation, suggest treatment before surgery, or explain why an operation should be avoided. The review should address whether the proposed procedure can remove the tumour, what nearby structures may be affected and what recovery may involve.

A surgical opinion is not a promise of a particular result. Different surgeons may recommend different reasonable approaches because tumour location, previous treatment and your priorities affect the decision. Request the operation note if a procedure has already happened, along with scan images, pathology reports, blood results, medication information and the proposed consent form. Ask the first team to explain the planned operation in plain language, then give the same information to the reviewing surgeon. Ask how the recommendation would change if the tumour is found to be larger, involves nearby tissue or has different pathology. Confirm who will coordinate care and whether a delay could affect the treatment sequence.

A second opinion should not postpone emergency treatment. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe breathlessness, fainting, new weakness, confusion, uncontrolled pain or signs of infection after an operation. Contact the surgical team promptly for wound separation, rapidly worsening swelling, persistent vomiting or inability to pass urine.
