What should you know about second stage liposuction garments?

Short answer
Second-stage liposuction garments usually provide gentler, more flexible compression after early swelling has reduced and healing is progressing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main role
- Support healing tissues and accommodate settling swelling
- Fit check
- It should feel supportive without numbness, sharp pressure, or circulation changes
What a second-stage garment means
After liposuction, a clinician may move you from a firm early garment to a lighter design. The later garment may have thinner fabric, easier fastenings, or less coverage while still supporting treated areas. Its purpose is to help you feel supported during movement, limit rubbing, and accommodate changing swelling; it does not remove fat or reshape tissue by itself. The timing depends on the procedure, treated body region, incision healing, and your clinician’s examination.
Using it comfortably
Wear the garment for the schedule your surgical team gives you, and check that the seams do not dig into incisions or create numbness. Keep the skin clean and dry, follow wound-care instructions, and inspect the treated area when changing. Do not tighten it independently if swelling changes. A garment that rolls, causes sharp pressure, or leaves persistent marks needs review. Your liposuction aftercare plan takes priority over general garment advice.
When to contact your care team
Contact the surgical team promptly for worsening pain, rapidly increasing one-sided swelling, spreading redness, drainage, fever, shortness of breath, chest pain, or a cold, pale, blue, or numb area beneath the garment. Remove or loosen the garment only as instructed if it seems to impair circulation. Sudden breathing or chest symptoms require urgent medical attention.
Questions to ask
Ask when to change garments, how many hours to wear the second stage, whether you may sleep or exercise in it, how to wash it, and which symptoms mean the fit or compression should be reassessed.

Questions people ask
Is a second-stage garment the same as the first garment?
No. It is often lighter or more flexible, but the correct change and timing are specific to your recovery.
Can you choose the size yourself?
Use the measurements and fitting advice from your surgical team, especially while swelling is changing.
