What should you know about second skin for blisters?

A flexible dressing can create a smooth barrier over a small friction blister, reducing rubbing from footwear or equipment. The blister roof often protects the tender skin underneath, so a dressing should cushion rather than squeeze it. The surrounding skin must be dry enough for the adhesive to hold without causing a rash.

Not every blister comes from friction. Chickenpox may cause itchy lesions in several areas, while Shingles often causes painful grouped blisters in a band. Contact Dermatitis and Dyshidrotic Eczema can also produce blisters. Sunburn may blister after significant skin injury, so the cause matters.

Clean your hands, gently clean the area and pat it dry. Apply the dressing around the blister without pressing directly on its centre. Reduce the rubbing source, and replace the dressing when it is wet, dirty, loose or irritating. Do not puncture a small blister yourself or peel away attached skin.

If it breaks, allow fluid to drain gently, keep the loose skin in place and cover it with a clean non-stick dressing. Avoid sharing towels or touching grouped lesions, and ask for medical advice if the pattern suggests an infectious condition.

Seek medical review for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, red streaks or pain that is increasing. Get prompt advice for blisters near an eye, on the mouth, over a large area, or appearing in repeated crops. Painful grouped blisters or a new rash with illness may need timely assessment and Antiviral Treatment.
