Ask what qualifications the reviewing clinicians have and whether the opinion is advisory or intended to direct ongoing care.

A second opinion does not replace the clinician responsible for immediate symptoms or emergency decisions. Its value is greatest when the question is specific, such as whether surgery is needed, whether a diagnosis needs clarification, or how treatment choices compare.

Prepare a one-page timeline of symptoms, investigations, diagnosis, and treatments. Gather original scan images, reports, pathology material or report, medication details, and the contact information for your treating team. Write the decision you need help with and what matters to you, such as preserving function, reducing appointments, or understanding side effects. Check how the service protects medical information, how questions are answered after the report, and how the opinion will be shared with your care team.
