What should you know about scratching ringworm?

Ringworm is a fungal infection, not a worm. It often causes an itchy, scaly rash that may expand outward while the centre looks different from the edge. Scratching can create small breaks, increase soreness, and move fungal material under fingernails to another body site. It can also spread the infection through towels, clothing, bedding, or close skin contact. The itch and appearance alone cannot confirm ringworm because several rashes can look similar.

Wash hands after touching the rash, keep nails short, and avoid sharing towels, hats, clothing, or brushes. Gently wash the area and dry it thoroughly, especially in skin folds. Change clothing that becomes damp with sweat. Avoid covering the rash with a tight, non-breathable dressing. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether topical antifungal treatment is appropriate; scalp, nail, extensive, or persistent infection may need a different approach.

Arrange assessment if the rash is spreading, painful, oozing, repeatedly scratched open, or not improving with an appropriate product. Seek prompt care for a scalp rash with hair loss, swollen tender areas, or pus, because deeper infection can damage follicles. Get urgent help if you develop facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a severe reaction after applying a product.

Ask whether the rash needs testing, which treatment fits its location, how long to continue it, and how to reduce transmission at home. Tell the clinician about treatments already tried, similar symptoms in household members, and any scalp or nail involvement.
