What should you know about scraping off cradle cap?

Short answer
Cradle cap should be loosened gently and washed away, not scraped, because scraping can injure the scalp and cause infection.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What cradle cap means
Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, causes greasy or dry scales on a baby’s scalp. It is usually not caused by poor hygiene and is not generally contagious. The scales can look thick, but pulling or scraping them may remove healthy skin underneath, causing bleeding, soreness, and an opening for germs. Similar-looking changes can come from eczema, psoriasis, or infection, so an unusual or persistent rash deserves an assessment.
Gentle home care
Massage a small amount of plain emollient onto the scalp and leave it for a short period to soften the scale. Use a soft baby brush or cloth with light strokes, then wash with a mild baby shampoo and rinse thoroughly. Remove only flakes that come away easily; never use fingernails, comb teeth, or household oils that may irritate the skin. Repeat gentle care as needed rather than trying to clear every scale at once. A clinician may recommend emollient therapy or, if another condition is suspected, topical antifungal treatment.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if the scalp is very red, swollen, wet, bleeding, painful, foul-smelling, or spreading beyond the scalp. Seek urgent care if your baby seems unusually unwell, has a fever, or develops swelling around the eyes. Ask for guidance when scales do not improve with gentle care or hair loss appears in patches.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the appearance fits cradle cap, which product is suitable for your baby’s age, how often to wash the scalp, and which signs suggest infection or another diagnosis. Check before using any medicated cream or shampoo.

Questions people ask
Will scraping make cradle cap go away faster?
It can damage the scalp without treating the cause, so gentle softening and washing are safer.
Can cradle cap spread to other people?
No. Cradle cap is not generally contagious, although another scalp condition can look similar.
