What should you know about scraping for scabies?

Scabies is caused by mites that burrow into the outer skin. During a scraping, a clinician selects a suspicious burrow or rash, gently collects surface material, and examines the sample under a microscope. Finding a mite, egg, or faecal material supports the diagnosis. The sample may miss mites because they are few or because the chosen area is not active, so a negative result does not automatically exclude scabies. Diagnosis also considers the pattern of the rash, close contacts, and symptoms such as itchy skin or itching worse at night.

Book a GP consultation or dermatology assessment if you have an itchy rash, burrows, or household members with similar symptoms. Avoid scratching the area before review when possible, and mention recent contacts, travel, and products used on the skin. If scabies is diagnosed or strongly suspected, follow the prescribed scabies treatment exactly and ask whether close contacts need treatment at the same time. Wash or isolate recently used clothing, towels, and bedding according to local medical advice.

Seek prompt care for widespread crusting, pus, increasing warmth or pain, fever, or rapidly worsening skin damage. Older adults, infants, pregnant people, and anyone with a weakened immune system may need earlier assessment. Urgent review is also needed if severe itching prevents sleep or if eye, mouth, or genital skin is involved.
