SCFE X-ray findings explained

The hip growth plate is the separation between the developing ball of the hip and the femoral neck. On an X-ray, a clinician compares its width and alignment with the other hip. Findings can include a widened or uneven growth plate, loss of the smooth line where the ball meets the neck, or displacement that makes the femoral head appear lower or farther back.

An X-ray can support the diagnosis, but the picture is interpreted alongside symptoms, walking pattern and examination. Early or mild SCFE can be subtle, and pain may be felt in the knee or thigh rather than the hip. A limp deserves assessment; read about [Limping](/symptoms/limping/).

Keep sports and weight-bearing limited until the treating team explains the result. Ask whether the slip is stable, whether the opposite hip needs imaging, and whether additional views or scans are needed. Seek urgent care for increasing hip, thigh or knee pain, a new or worsening limp, or inability to stand. Sudden severe pain, an outwardly turned leg or complete refusal to walk needs prompt attention because the slip may have become unstable.

Ask what the X-ray shows about the growth plate and alignment, whether the slip is stable, how much weight is safe, and what treatment timing is recommended. Ask how follow-up imaging will monitor the other hip and recovery.
