SCFE treatment without surgery: what to know

Short answer
SCFE usually needs urgent orthopaedic treatment because rest alone cannot reliably stabilise the slipped growth plate.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Condition
- Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE)
- Until assessed
- Stop sports and limit weight on the leg
- Main concern
- An unstable or worsening growth-plate slip
What SCFE means
Slipped capital femoral epiphysis happens when the upper femoral growth plate weakens and the ball of the hip shifts in relation to the thigh bone. It affects children and teenagers, often during a growth spurt. Hip, groin, thigh or knee discomfort can occur, and a limp may be the clearest sign. See more about [Limping](/symptoms/limping/).
Avoid treating suspected SCFE as a routine muscle strain. Weight-bearing can worsen the slip, and a stable-looking presentation can change. Non-surgical measures such as stopping sport, using crutches and avoiding weight on the leg may protect the hip while arrangements are made, but they do not repair or secure the growth plate.
What to do now
Stop running, jumping and sports until a clinician assesses the hip. Do not ask the child to walk through pain; use assistance or transport that limits weight on the affected leg. Arrange prompt assessment with an orthopaedic service. Doctors commonly use examination and hip imaging to judge stability and displacement. Treatment often involves securing the growth plate with fixation; learn more about [Fracture Fixation Surgery](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/fracture-fixation-surgery/).
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical care for a new limp, hip or thigh pain, knee pain without a clear knee injury, or refusal to bear weight in a child or teenager. Go promptly if pain suddenly becomes severe, the leg appears shortened or turned outward, or walking becomes impossible. Keep activity stopped while travelling for assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the slip is stable, whether both hips need imaging, how strictly weight-bearing must be limited, and which treatment will protect the growth plate. Ask what symptoms should prompt immediate return after assessment.

Questions people ask
Can rest heal SCFE without surgery?
Rest may reduce loading while care is arranged, but it cannot reliably hold the slipped growth plate in place.
Can a child with suspected SCFE walk?
Do not encourage walking through symptoms; limit weight on the leg and seek prompt orthopaedic assessment.
