What should you know about SCFE MRI?

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis happens when the head of the thigh bone shifts through a weakened growth plate near the hip. MRI uses a magnetic field to create detailed images without ionising radiation. It may show swelling, irritation, a subtle change at the growth plate, or a slip that is not clear on initial X-rays. The scan also helps the specialist look at nearby bone and soft tissue.

If SCFE is suspected, avoid putting weight on the affected leg until a clinician gives clear advice. Arrange prompt orthopaedic assessment and take any earlier images and symptom history. During MRI, the child needs to lie still in a narrow scanner; tell the imaging team about metal implants, devices, or severe anxiety. Treatment commonly aims to stop further movement of the growth plate, sometimes with fixation surgery.

Seek urgent medical care for new hip, groin, thigh, or knee pain with limping, especially when weight-bearing becomes difficult. Sudden worsening pain, inability to stand, or a leg that appears turned outward needs immediate assessment. Do not wait for an MRI appointment if symptoms rapidly worsen.
