SCFE diagnosis: how doctors assess it

The clinician asks about the onset and location of pain, limping, activity limits, falls, growth, and medical history. Pain may be in the knee or thigh even when the hip is responsible. During examination, the clinician compares both sides, checks walking if safe, and assesses hip movement, especially rotation.

Imaging helps show the growth plate and the position of the upper thigh bone. Views of both hips can reveal a subtle slip or changes on the side without clear symptoms. The degree of displacement and whether the child can bear weight help the specialist plan care.

Keep a note of the limp, pain locations, and any change in walking. Stop impact activity and avoid repeatedly testing painful movement.
