What should you know about scfe age?

Short answer
Slipped capital femoral epiphysis most often affects children or adolescents while the hip growth plate is still open, but age alone cannot diagnose it.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical setting
- A growing child or teenager with an open hip growth plate
- Possible presentation
- Hip, thigh, or knee pain with a limp
- Until assessed
- Avoid weight-bearing sports and forced walking
How age fits
SCFE is a problem at the growth plate near the top of the thigh bone. It is linked to the period when that plate has not yet closed, so it is seen mainly in growing children and teenagers. The timing differs between individuals. Hip, groin, thigh, or knee pain with a limp can be a presentation of SCFE, but these symptoms also have other possible causes. A child who avoids putting weight on one leg needs clinical assessment rather than an age-based guess.
What to do
Stop running, jumping, and sports if SCFE is suspected. Do not encourage the child to walk through hip or knee pain. Arrange prompt medical assessment; the clinician may compare hip movement and request imaging. If SCFE is confirmed, treatment commonly aims to prevent further slipping and protect the hip, often with fixation surgery. Follow the weight-bearing instructions carefully after treatment.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care when a child suddenly cannot bear weight, has severe hip pain after a minor movement, or develops rapidly worsening pain. Prompt review is also needed for a new limp, persistent knee pain without a clear knee injury, or reduced ability to turn the leg inward. Do not use symptom frequency to decide urgency; inability to bear weight and worsening function are the key concerns.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the growth plate is still open, whether both hips need assessment, what imaging is needed, and whether weight should be kept off the leg. Clarify the treatment plan, activity restrictions, and what changes should trigger immediate review.

Questions people ask
Does a certain age prove that a child has SCFE?
No. Age changes how clinicians think about risk, but diagnosis depends on symptoms, examination, and imaging.
Can SCFE pain be felt in the knee?
Yes. Hip problems can be felt in the thigh or knee, which is why a persistent unexplained limp needs assessment.
