Scarring From Plasma Pen: What to Know

A plasma pen is a device that creates a controlled thermal injury at the skin surface. Redness, swelling, crusting, and temporary colour change can occur during healing, but a depressed area, raised firm scar, persistent darkening, or pale patch needs assessment. Risk may be affected by treatment depth, skin type, sun exposure, aftercare, and whether the area became infected. The device and the treatment are related but not interchangeable terms.

Follow the treating clinician’s cleansing and dressing instructions, avoid picking crusts, and protect the area from sunlight once the skin has closed. Do not apply acids, retinoids, fragranced products, or home bleaching agents to broken skin unless specifically advised. Keep a record of the procedure date and photograph changes without repeatedly rubbing the area. A clinician can decide whether the mark is normal healing, pigment alteration, infection, or a scar and can discuss options after the skin has settled.

Contact the treating clinic if redness, warmth, swelling, pain, or discharge is increasing rather than settling. Seek urgent care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, facial swelling near the eye, or breathing difficulty. Arrange review for a mark that remains raised, indented, itchy, or increasingly different in colour after the expected healing period.

Ask what device settings were used, how the area should be protected, whether infection or pigment change is present, and when scar treatment would be appropriate.
