Scarring After Plasma Pen: What You Should Know

A temporary crust, redness, swelling, or darker or lighter colour can be part of healing and is not automatically a permanent scar. A scar may look raised, indented, firm, shiny, or persistently discoloured after the surface has closed.

A plasma pen creates small areas of heat-related injury intended to trigger skin remodelling. If the injury is deeper than intended, becomes infected, or is repeatedly irritated during healing, the repair process may alter the skin’s texture or colour. Individual healing tendency, treatment intensity, skin tone, sun exposure, and picking at crusts can all affect the final appearance.

Raised or firm scars may reflect extra collagen production. Depressed scars can form when deeper tissue is lost during healing. Dark marks after inflammation are especially noticeable in some skin tones and may fade gradually, while colour change can also persist. A clinician needs to examine the area to distinguish a scar from ongoing inflammation or infection.

Follow the treating clinician’s wound-care instructions, keep the area clean as directed, and avoid peeling, scratching, or removing crusts. Do not add exfoliating acids, retinoids, fragranced products, or home scar remedies unless a clinician says they are suitable for the healing stage.

Protect the area from sunlight once the skin has closed, using the protection recommended for your skin and treatment site. Sun exposure can deepen post-inflammatory colour changes. Arrange a review if the mark remains raised, indented, itchy, painful, or strongly different in colour after the expected healing period. Treatments may include silicone-based care, prescription medicines, injections, light-based treatment, or procedures, depending on the scar type and skin tone.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if redness is spreading, pain or warmth is increasing, swelling is worsening, or the area develops pus, a bad smell, fever, or wound separation. These features can indicate infection or delayed healing and need assessment rather than home scar treatment.

Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing facial swelling, trouble breathing, or swelling around the eye that affects vision. For persistent texture or colour change without these warning signs, book a dermatology review and bring the treatment date, aftercare products used, and photographs showing how the area changed.

Ask whether the change looks like a raised scar, an indented scar, post-inflammatory colour change, infection, or another healing problem. You can also ask when active scar treatment should begin, which products are appropriate for your skin tone, how to reduce sun-related darkening, and whether the original plasma device settings or your healing history alter future treatment choices.
