Possible causes of scarlett fever

A fever reflects an immune response, while a rash reflects changes in the skin and blood vessels. Together they may occur with viral infection, bacterial infection, a medicine reaction, heat, or another inflammatory problem. The appearance and spread of the rash, associated cough or throat symptoms, exposure history, and the person’s age and health help guide assessment. Acute Bronchitis, Bronchiolitis, Brucellosis, Cellulitis, Chickenpox, Common Cold, COVID-19, and Croup have different patterns; a symptom label cannot distinguish them.

Photograph the rash in good light if it changes quickly, and write down when fever started, where the rash began, how it feels, and whether it fades with pressure. Mention new foods, medicines, skin products, travel, animal contact, and illness in the household. Encourage fluids and rest. Avoid applying unfamiliar creams or sharing medicines before advice, because these can irritate the skin or obscure useful clues. A clinician may examine the skin, mouth, chest, and other areas before deciding whether tests are needed.

Call emergency services for breathing trouble, swelling of the lips or tongue, fainting, confusion, seizure, or a rapidly spreading rash with severe illness. Seek urgent assessment for a rash that does not fade when pressed, severe headache with neck stiffness, repeated vomiting, marked dehydration, or unusual sleepiness. Arrange a clinical review when fever continues, the rash worsens, or the person has a weakened immune system.
