What is scarlet virus fever?

Fever is the body’s response to infection or inflammation. A red or flushed rash may appear with viral illnesses, bacterial infections, heat, medicines, or skin inflammation. The rash’s texture, location, timing, and whether it fades under pressure help a clinician narrow the possibilities. Other clues include cough, runny nose, breathing changes, vomiting, diarrhoea, sore throat, eye irritation, or exposure to an unwell person. Fever does not identify one condition by itself.

Measure temperature with a reliable thermometer and note readings alongside the person’s behaviour, fluid intake, urine, and new symptoms. Encourage small, frequent drinks and light clothing; avoid cold baths and do not give medicines intended for someone else. Keep the person away from vulnerable contacts while they are unwell, and follow local clinical advice about testing. A clinician may consider conditions such as Acute Bronchitis, Bronchiolitis, Chickenpox, Common Cold, COVID-19, or Croup according to the symptom pattern.

Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, a seizure, collapse, confusion, or a child who is unusually difficult to wake. Seek prompt care for dehydration, a stiff neck, a purple or bruise-like rash, a rash that does not fade when pressed, or fever with a rapidly worsening appearance. Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and those with weakened immunity should seek advice early when fever is accompanied by a new rash.
