What should you know about scarlet fever virus?

Scarlet fever is a bacterial infection often associated with strep throat. It can cause a sore throat, fever, swollen glands and a fine rash that feels rough like sandpaper. The rash pattern and intensity vary, and not every person has the same combination of symptoms. Cough and runny nose may point toward another cause, so a clinician should assess the whole illness rather than relying on the rash alone.

Arrange an assessment if fever and throat pain occur with a new rough rash. Until then, encourage fluids and rest, wash hands, cover coughs and avoid sharing drinking vessels. A throat examination or test may guide treatment. If antibiotics are prescribed, use them as directed and do not save leftover doses for another illness. Follow advice about staying away from school, work or close contacts.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids or saliva, marked weakness, confusion, very little urine or vomiting that prevents hydration. Contact a clinician promptly if the fever or rash worsens, the neck becomes increasingly swollen, or symptoms return after treatment.
