What should you know about scarlet fever us?

The bacteria linked with scarlet fever are the same group that can cause strep throat. Some people develop a fine, rough-feeling red rash, often beginning on the chest or neck and spreading. The tongue may look unusually red, while the throat can be sore and swallowing uncomfortable. Children are commonly affected, but adults can also develop it. A clinician uses the symptoms, examination and sometimes a throat test to decide whether scarlet fever is likely.

Arrange a medical review when a new rough rash appears with fever or throat symptoms. Until reviewed, offer frequent drinks, rest and foods that are easy to swallow. Do not share household items that touch the mouth, and wash hands after coughing, sneezing or caring for the sick person. Use only medicines suitable for the person’s age and health history. If an antibiotic is prescribed, follow the label and finish the course unless the clinician gives different instructions.

Get urgent medical help if breathing becomes difficult, swallowing saliva is not possible, the person is unusually hard to wake, urine becomes very sparse, or vomiting prevents fluids staying down. Seek prompt review for a worsening rash, severe throat pain, persistent fever, neck swelling or symptoms that return after initial improvement.
