Scarlet fever temperature: what to know

Scarlet fever is linked to the same group of bacteria that can cause Strep Throat. Fever reflects the body’s response to infection, but temperature alone cannot confirm scarlet fever. Look for the wider pattern: throat pain, tender or swollen neck glands, a coated tongue, tiredness, and a rash that may feel like fine sandpaper. A child may also have tummy discomfort or reduced appetite.

Arrange a medical assessment when a fever occurs with a sore throat and rash, particularly in a child. Offer frequent drinks, encourage rest, and keep clothing light and comfortable. Use fever medicine only as directed for the person’s age and circumstances; never give aspirin to a child. Do not share cups, towels, or cutlery. If scarlet fever is diagnosed, follow the prescribed Antibiotic Treatment plan and complete it unless the clinician changes the advice.

Seek urgent help if the person has trouble breathing, cannot swallow fluids, is unusually drowsy, develops a stiff neck, or shows signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Prompt medical review is also needed when fever is worsening, lasts beyond the expected illness, or returns after improving. A rapidly spreading rash, purple or bruise-like spots, or a child who looks seriously unwell should be assessed without delay.

Ask whether the symptoms fit scarlet fever or another infection, whether a throat test is needed, how to monitor the temperature, and when the person can return to school or close contact.
