Scarlet fever side effects

Scarlet fever may involve a rough rash, sore throat, fever, headache, swollen glands, nausea, or reduced appetite. As the skin recovers, dryness or peeling may be noticed. These effects can overlap with other infections, so symptoms alone do not confirm the cause. Antibiotics may cause stomach upset, loose stools, or an allergic reaction. A new symptom after starting medicine should be considered alongside its timing and severity rather than assumed to be part of the infection.

Offer fluids regularly and use soft foods if the throat hurts. Keep the skin clean and moisturised with a plain product, and do not pull at peeling areas. Follow the prescribed medicine instructions and check with a pharmacist before adding an over-the-counter product. Get urgent help for wheezing, breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, collapse, or a widespread raised or blistering rash after medicine. Seek prompt care for severe diarrhoea, blood in stool, inability to drink, very little urine, confusion, or rapidly worsening illness. Painful skin peeling, mouth sores, or eye involvement also need assessment.

Ask which effects are expected from the infection, which could be medicine-related, and whether a dose should be changed. Tell the clinician about previous drug reactions and any symptoms involving breathing, swelling, or the gut.
