How long does scarlet fever last?

The illness may start with Fever, a Sore Throat, tiredness and swollen neck glands. A fine rough rash can develop as the illness progresses. Throat discomfort and temperature may ease before the skin looks normal again, and peeling can occur as the rash fades. Recovery time varies with age, general health, treatment and the severity of symptoms, so a lingering rash does not automatically mean the infection is worsening.

Follow the clinician's advice and take prescribed Antibiotic Treatment as directed. Encourage drinks, rest and gentle foods when swallowing is uncomfortable. Use simple skin care and avoid scratching irritated areas. Wash hands regularly and avoid sharing personal items. Ask when the person may return to school, work or close contact, because that depends on treatment and the person's improvement.

Seek prompt medical advice if symptoms are not improving, return after settling, or become more intense. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow, severe dehydration, confusion, collapse or a rapidly worsening rash. Fever that persists or returns, or markedly enlarged Swollen Glands with increasing pain, also merits review.
