Scarlet fever bacteria: what to know

Short answer
Scarlet fever is caused by toxin-producing bacteria that can infect the throat and trigger a rough skin rash.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the bacteria cause symptoms
The bacteria associated with scarlet fever can infect the throat and may cause Strep Throat. Some strains release toxins that produce the fine, sandpaper-like rash for which scarlet fever is known. Fever, sore throat, swollen neck glands and a red tongue may occur alongside the skin changes. The bacteria spread mainly through close contact with respiratory secretions. A rash alone cannot establish the cause, because other infections and skin conditions can look similar; a clinician uses the full symptom pattern and examination.
What helps
Arrange medical advice when a sore throat and fever occur with a rough rash, particularly if someone nearby has had a similar illness. Fluids, rest and soft foods can make recovery more comfortable. Wash hands, cover coughs and sneezes, and avoid sharing cups or cutlery. A clinician may test the throat or prescribe Antibiotic Treatment when indicated. Follow the prescription carefully and ask before stopping or changing it.
Urgent symptoms
Seek urgent care for breathing problems, inability to swallow saliva, severe dehydration, confusion, collapse or fast-growing swelling of the throat or neck. Contact a clinician promptly when the fever continues, symptoms are worsening or the rash becomes painful, blistered or purple. Rapid change can point to a more serious process requiring direct examination.
Questions to ask
Ask which findings support a bacterial throat infection, whether testing is needed, how to reduce household spread and what changes should prompt reassessment. Mention medicine allergies and any previous reaction to antibiotics.

Questions people ask
Is every sore throat caused by scarlet fever bacteria?
No. Sore throats have many causes. Scarlet fever is considered when a compatible throat illness occurs with characteristic skin or tongue findings.
Do antibiotics remove the rash immediately?
The rash may not disappear at once. Use the prescribed treatment as directed and contact the clinician if symptoms worsen or new warning signs appear.
