Scarlet fever age range: what to know

The illness is especially recognised in children who attend school or nursery because close contact helps throat infections spread. Age alone cannot confirm or exclude scarlet fever. A child may have a sore throat, fever, swollen glands in the neck, and a fine, rough-textured rash that can feel like sandpaper. The tongue may look unusually red. Babies and adults can also become unwell. In a very young child, symptoms may be less typical, so changes in feeding, alertness, or wet nappies deserve attention.
