Scar compression garment: what to know

A compression garment is designed to sit closely against the skin. Pressure can support scar management and may also help control swelling in an area affected by treatment or surgery. The garment should not cause sharp pain, numbness, tingling, colour change, or cold skin. Its usefulness depends on the scar, the surrounding tissue, the stage of healing, and the fit.

A scar may feel firm, raised, itchy, or sensitive while it matures. Those changes do not establish the cause of a new symptom. A clinician or trained therapist can examine the area and decide whether compression is suitable.

Have the garment measured or fitted by a qualified professional where possible. Follow the recommended wearing schedule and remove it for skin checks, washing, and any care instructions. Keep the skin clean and dry, and inspect seams or edges for rubbing. Wash the garment as directed so its shape and pressure remain consistent.

Do not fold, cut, or add padding under the garment unless your care team advises it. If swelling is part of the problem, lymphoedema therapy may add skin care, movement advice, and other techniques. Bring the garment to appointments if the fit feels different as healing changes.

Remove the garment and contact your care team if you develop increasing pain, new numbness, pins and needles, marked swelling, skin breakdown, blisters, or a change in skin colour. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness with fever, severe shortness of breath, or sudden swelling of a limb. A garment should support care, not conceal an infection or restrict circulation.
