What should you know about scaphoid plaster cast?

A scaphoid cast commonly supports the wrist and part of the thumb. It reduces movement that could disturb a fracture or aggravate nearby soft tissue. Plaster of Paris can be shaped while wet; fibreglass cast material is another option after swelling and the injury pattern have been considered. The exact cast design and wearing time depend on examination findings, imaging, and follow-up.

Keep the cast dry unless your care team has supplied a waterproof plan. Do not put objects inside it, trim its edges, or alter the padding. Raise the hand when swelling is present and move the free fingers gently if permitted. Avoid lifting, contact sport, and pressure through the cast. Attend scheduled reviews so the fit, skin, circulation, and healing can be checked. After immobilisation ends, physiotherapy may help rebuild wrist and thumb movement.

Contact the treating service promptly if the cast becomes wet, cracked, loose, tight, or develops a sharp edge. Get urgent help for increasing pain, marked swelling, numbness, tingling, blue or cold fingers, inability to move the fingers, a bad smell, drainage, or skin burning. Do not wait for a routine appointment when circulation or sensation changes.
