What should you know about scaphoid ligament sprain?

Short answer

A scaphoid ligament sprain stretches or tears wrist ligaments near the thumb-side scaphoid bone and needs protection while it heals.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means

The scaphoid sits close to the base of the thumb and helps the wrist move smoothly. A fall onto an open hand, a twist, or a forceful impact can strain the supporting ligaments. Pain may be felt in the hollow beside the thumb, with swelling, tenderness, reduced grip, or discomfort when pinching. A sprain and a scaphoid fracture can feel similar, so a clinician may need to examine the wrist and arrange imaging.

What to do now

Rest the wrist from lifting, pushing, sport, and repeated gripping. Keep it supported in the position recommended by your clinician; a thumb-and-wrist splint may limit painful movement. Cold wrapped in cloth can help swelling for short periods. Keep the hand raised when practical, and do not massage the painful area or test it forcefully. Once a fracture has been excluded and pain settles, guided exercises can restore movement and strength. Kinesiology taping or physiotherapy may be considered as part of that plan.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt assessment after an injury if pain is focused over the scaphoid area, grip is weak, or swelling and tenderness do not settle. Seek urgent help for a deformed wrist, an open wound, numb or blue fingers, severe swelling, or fingers that are cold or difficult to move. Persistent thumb-side pain deserves review even if the first examination seemed reassuring, because some scaphoid injuries are not obvious at first.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the examination suggests a ligament injury or a scaphoid fracture, whether repeat imaging is needed, how long support should be worn, and which movements are safe. You can also ask when to begin rehabilitation and whether splinting, physiotherapy, or taping fits your recovery.

Questions people ask

Can a scaphoid ligament sprain look like a fracture?

Yes. Pain and tenderness can overlap, so clinical examination and imaging may be needed to distinguish them.

Should I exercise a painful wrist?

Avoid forceful exercise until a fracture is excluded and a clinician has explained which gentle movements are appropriate.
