What should you know about scaly sunburn?

Sunburn injures skin cells. As the irritated surface settles, damaged cells can loosen and peel, leaving dry flakes, tenderness, redness, or tightness. Peeling may happen after the initial heat and redness, and the new surface can feel sensitive. A sunburn can also form fluid-filled blisters, especially when the injury is deeper.

Repeated unprotected exposure contributes to sun-damaged skin over time. Scaly skin is not a reason to pull flakes away, because that can expose tender skin and increase irritation. If scale continues beyond recovery or appears without a clear exposure, another skin problem may be present.

Move out of direct sun, cool the skin with a damp cloth or lukewarm shower, and drink fluids. Apply a bland moisturiser or emollient without fragrance; smooth it on rather than rubbing. Leave peeling skin attached and protect the area with loose clothing. Do not burst blisters, use ice directly, or apply irritant products. A clinician may advise a medicine for inflammation in selected cases, including whether a topical corticosteroid is appropriate.

Seek prompt medical advice for extensive blistering, severe pain, marked swelling, repeated vomiting, dizziness, faintness, confusion, fever, chills, or signs of infection such as spreading warmth, pus, or worsening tenderness. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face. Children, older adults, and people with significant medical conditions may need earlier assessment.
