What should you know about scaly skin rash?

Note whether the rash is dry, greasy, thick, sharply bordered, ring-shaped, or made of small patches. Itch commonly accompanies dermatitis and psoriasis. Ringworm often expands from a more active edge, while Tinea Versicolor can cause fine scale over altered-colour patches. Seborrheic Dermatitis tends to affect oilier areas such as the scalp, eyebrows, sides of the nose, or chest.

A rash is a visible symptom, not a diagnosis. New soaps, medicines, sweating, friction, shaving, and recent contact with another person or pet can all be relevant. A clinician may inspect the scale and take a simple surface sample when infection is possible.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, avoid scrubbing, and apply a fragrance-free moisturiser after drying. Emollient Therapy can reduce tightness and limit further barrier damage. Keep towels and clothing personal if a fungal infection is suspected, and avoid sharing topical medicines.

Topical Antifungal Treatment is used for a confirmed or strongly suspected fungal cause; it will not treat every scaly rash. Psoriasis or inflammatory dermatitis may need a different topical plan, and selected widespread psoriasis may be treated with Narrowband UVB Phototherapy. Avoid combining several active creams without guidance.

Seek prompt medical care if the rash spreads quickly, becomes hot or painful, develops pus, blisters, extensive peeling, facial swelling, or fever. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips or tongue. Arrange routine review when the rash persists, repeatedly returns, or interferes with sleep.
