What should you know about scaly skin on lips?

Lips lose moisture easily. Wind, sun, lip licking, dehydration, fragranced balms, flavouring agents, and some cosmetics can trigger peeling or cracking. Contact irritation may affect the outline of the lips, while soreness at the corners can have a different cause. Psoriasis or dermatitis can involve the lips, but lip scaling alone does not identify either condition.

Ringworm and Tinea Versicolor are less typical explanations for isolated lip scaling. A clinician considers the exact surface involved, swelling, blisters, crusting, mouth symptoms, medication exposure, and whether the change is on one persistent spot.

Book an assessment for a rough, scaly, bleeding, crusted, or tender area that does not settle with gentle protection, especially if it remains in one place. Seek urgent help for sudden lip swelling with breathing difficulty, widespread blistering, or rapidly spreading redness. Painful cracks with discharge also need prompt review.
