Scaly skin behind the ears: what to know

Sweat, shampoo residue, hair products, glasses or mask loops can irritate the crease behind an ear. Seborrheic dermatitis often affects oily areas near the scalp and ears, while psoriasis can produce thicker, sharply defined scaling. Ringworm may form a spreading scaly border. A small flaky patch does not identify one cause by itself. Recurrent scaling may need a skin examination so treatment matches the problem rather than simply masking it.

Wash gently, rinse away product residue and pat the fold completely dry. Apply a bland moisturiser to intact skin; Emollient Therapy explains barrier support. Avoid scratching, cotton buds, fragranced products and occlusive coverings that trap moisture. Keep headphones, helmet straps and eyewear clean if they touch the area. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, tenderness, pus, foul-smelling drainage, fever, or redness spreading onto the scalp or face. Arrange review for deep cracks, bleeding, hearing changes, severe itch, or scaling that persists despite gentle care. Urgent help is appropriate for rapidly worsening facial swelling or severe illness.

Ask whether the patch fits seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, contact irritation or a fungal infection, and whether the ear canal is clear. Ask which cleanser and moisturiser suit the fold.
