Scaly Rash on the Hands: Causes and Relief

Frequent handwashing, sanitiser, detergents, solvents, wet work, and cold or dry air can strip the skin barrier. Contact dermatitis may cause redness, itch, burning, cracks, or blisters after exposure to an irritant or allergen. Atopic dermatitis can affect the hands, and psoriasis may create thicker, sharply defined scale. Ringworm can be asymmetric or have a clearer advancing edge. Scabies is more likely when intense itch affects household contacts or other typical sites. The appearance may change after creams are applied, so mention every treatment used.

Rinse with lukewarm water, use a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and moisturise after every wash. For wet or chemical tasks, wear suitable protective gloves with clean, dry cotton liners when practical, and remove gloves if sweat builds up. Do not scratch, peel cracks, or use harsh disinfectants on broken skin. Pause newly introduced rings, creams, and nail products if they touch the affected area. Keep separate towels if infection is possible and photograph the palms, backs, and finger webs as the rash changes.

See a clinician if cracks are deep, movement is painful, the rash is spreading, one hand is persistently affected, or the problem keeps returning despite barrier care. Prompt assessment is needed for pus, increasing warmth, swelling, severe pain, fever, or rapidly worsening redness. Urgent care is appropriate for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread blistering or peeling, or a severe medicine-related rash.
