Scaly Rash on the Face: What to Know

Facial scale may follow a new cleanser, cosmetic, sunscreen, hair product, mask, or shaving product. Atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis often cause itch, dryness, and irritation. Psoriasis may form well-defined plaques, while ringworm can make an enlarging scaly edge. Heat, sweat, or rubbing can aggravate a rash. A medicine reaction may affect more than the face, particularly if it appears soon after starting or changing a medicine. Scaling around the nose, eyebrows, ears, or hairline can have different causes, so an in-person look is useful when it persists.

Use lukewarm water, a mild fragrance-free cleanser, and a bland moisturiser. Pause nonessential new products and avoid exfoliating acids, scrubs, essential oils, and picking. Keep treatment away from the eyes and lips unless a clinician has specifically advised it. Do not use a strong steroid or an antifungal near the eyes without medical guidance. Clean makeup tools, avoid sharing them, and record products, medicines, sun exposure, and the timing of each flare.

Arrange a review if the rash is persistent, spreading, recurrent, painful, crusted, or close to the eyes. Seek urgent help for eye pain or vision change, facial swelling, breathing trouble, widespread blistering or peeling, fever with a rapidly worsening rash, or sores inside the mouth. A clinician may need to distinguish dermatitis from infection before recommending a cream.
