What should you know about scaly hand rash?

Frequent handwashing, detergents, solvents, gloves, and wet work can damage the skin barrier and cause redness, scale, burning, and cracks. Contact dermatitis may follow an irritant or an allergy. Atopic dermatitis can cause itchy, dry, inflamed skin, while psoriasis may produce thicker defined scale. Ringworm can affect one hand and may have a scaly border. Scabies often causes intense itch and may involve the spaces between fingers or household contacts.

Heat rash, intertrigo, or a drug rash can enter the discussion when other body areas are involved or symptoms began after a medicine, heat exposure, or skin-fold moisture. The rash pattern matters more than the word scaly alone.

Rinse off irritants, pat dry, and apply a thick bland moisturiser after washing. Wear protective gloves for wet or chemical tasks, using a suitable cotton layer if occlusion worsens sweating. Avoid fragranced products and picking at cracks. Keep nails short. A clinician may need to distinguish dermatitis from ringworm or scabies before choosing treatment; do not share towels or gloves while infection remains possible.

Seek an appointment if the rash is persistent, painful, spreading, recurrent, or limiting hand movement. Prompt care is needed for pus, increasing warmth, red streaks, fever, deep cracks, or rapidly worsening swelling. A rash after a new medicine with mouth sores, facial swelling, blistering, or breathing difficulty needs urgent assessment.

Ask whether the pattern suggests contact dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, fungal infection, or scabies; which workplace or household exposures matter; whether testing is needed; and how to protect cracked skin during daily tasks.
