Scalp Cellulitis Treatment: What to Know

Cellulitis affects deeper layers of skin and can cause a tender, warm, red, swollen area. On the scalp, swelling may be easier to feel than see beneath hair, and a cut, scratch, bite, inflamed follicle, or another skin break can provide an entry point. A clinician may examine the border, check for a collection of pus, and consider factors such as diabetes or a recent skin problem. This is distinct from a superficial rash or simple irritation.

Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and do not share or save doses. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or shaving over a swollen site, and mark or photograph the edge of redness if a clinician recommends monitoring its spread. Rest and fluids may support recovery, but home measures cannot replace treatment. Ask whether a wound, abscess, Athlete's Foot, or another source needs attention.

Seek same-day medical care for spreading redness, increasing warmth, swelling, scalp pain, drainage, or fever. Go to emergency care for confusion, faintness, fast breathing, severe weakness, or rapidly worsening illness because these can be warning signs of sepsis. People with diabetes or reduced immunity should contact a clinician early when infection is suspected.

Ask whether the infection is limited to the skin, whether there is an abscess needing drainage, how to monitor the border, and when improvement should begin. Confirm what to do if a dose is missed and which symptoms mean the antibiotic plan needs review.
