Scabies on the head: what to know

Scabies is caused by mites that burrow into the outer skin. Itching often becomes worse at night, and a rash may appear as small bumps, scratch marks, or thin tracks. In adults, the scalp is less commonly involved than areas such as the hands, wrists, waist, or genitals; in babies and some vulnerable people, the head may be involved.

Head itching alone does not identify scabies. Eczema, lice, allergic reactions, dry skin, and infection can look similar. A clinician may inspect the skin and ask whether close contacts are itching, because household spread changes the management plan.

Arrange a GP Consultation if you have a new itchy rash, night-time itching, suspected burrows, or an affected household contact. Do not use leftover insecticide or scalp products without advice. If scabies is diagnosed, follow the prescribed Scabies Treatment exactly, apply it to the recommended areas, and follow instructions for close contacts and household fabrics. Scratching can damage the skin, so keep nails short and use gentle cleansing.

Seek prompt medical care for an infant with a widespread rash, fever, poor feeding, or marked distress. Get help for rapidly spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, severe pain, or crusting, which can signal a secondary skin infection. Arrange review if itching continues after treatment or new burrows appear.
