Savlon for sunburn: what to know

Sunburn is an inflammatory injury from ultraviolet exposure. Skin may become red, hot, tender and later peel; more severe burns can form blisters. Savlon is designed for antiseptic cleansing and does not reverse ultraviolet injury. Applying a fragranced or irritating product to a fresh burn may increase discomfort, especially where the surface is blistered or peeling.

Move out of the sun, cool the skin with a cool damp cloth or a lukewarm shower, and drink fluids. Pat dry and use a bland moisturiser or emollient therapy if it feels comfortable. Do not pop blisters or pull away peeling skin. Keep the area covered from further sun with loose clothing, and avoid ice directly on the skin. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a topical corticosteroid is appropriate for the inflammation and body site.

Seek medical advice for extensive blistering, severe pain, signs of dehydration, fever, vomiting, confusion or faintness. Urgent help is needed for breathing difficulty, swelling involving the face, eye symptoms, or a burn in a very young child. Increasing redness, pus or worsening pain after the initial injury may indicate infection.

Ask how deep the burn appears, what can be applied safely, how to protect blisters, and when it is safe to resume normal sun exposure with effective protection.
