Savlon for insect bites: what to know

An insect bite injects material into the skin, and the immune response may produce a raised, itchy or warm patch. Scratching can break the surface and introduce bacteria; an antiseptic may be relevant to that small wound, but it does not remove the trigger or reliably settle inflammation. Some people develop lingering dark marks after the inflammation fades, known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Wash gently, pat dry and use a cool compress for short periods. Avoid scratching, tight clothing and applying several new products at once. If itch is widespread or interfering with sleep, a clinician or pharmacist may discuss antihistamine treatment. A topical corticosteroid may be considered for a suitable inflamed bite, but it should not be used on infected skin or broken areas unless advised. Stop any product that causes burning or a spreading rash.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, faintness, swelling of the lips or tongue, or rapidly worsening facial swelling. Arrange an assessment if redness expands, pain increases, pus appears, a red streak develops, or symptoms do not settle. A bite near the eye or inside the mouth also deserves prompt advice.
