Savlon for impetigo: what to know

Impetigo is a contagious bacterial infection that can cause small sores, blisters, oozing and a yellow-brown crust. A cleanser does not address bacteria established in the skin. Irritation from an antiseptic can also make sore skin harder to judge. Crusting skin can have other causes, including eczema that has become infected, so the appearance alone does not confirm the diagnosis.

Gently wash the area with lukewarm water, pat it dry and avoid rubbing or picking. Use a separate towel, wash hands after touching the rash and keep fingernails short to reduce spread. A clinician may recommend topical antibiotic therapy for a limited area or antibiotic therapy for skin infection when the infection is more extensive or otherwise needs medicine. Follow the product instructions and avoid applying Savlon inside the eyes, mouth or other sensitive areas.

Arrange medical advice promptly if sores are spreading, painful, repeatedly returning, near the eyes, or accompanied by fever or marked swelling. Seek urgent help for swelling around the eye, unusual drowsiness or difficulty breathing. Children, people with weakened immunity and anyone with diabetes may need earlier assessment.

Ask whether this is impetigo or infected eczema, whether a topical medicine is appropriate, how long treatment should continue, and when the person can return to close contact with others.
