The result is one part of a diagnosis, not a diagnosis by itself.

SALL4 is a protein marker that can be found in some tumour types and in certain non-cancerous cells. A positive, negative, or uneven staining pattern must be read with the tissue architecture, the clinical picture, and other stains. A positive result does not identify every tumour’s origin, while a negative result does not rule out cancer. The report may describe staining in tumour cells separately from staining in surrounding tissue.
