What should you know about a rusty cut and tetanus?

Tetanus is caused by toxins made by bacteria that can enter damaged skin, especially through punctures, wounds containing dirt, or tissue with limited oxygen. Rust is a sign that an object may be contaminated, but the metal colour does not determine risk. Tetanus can cause painful muscle stiffness and spasms, often starting around the jaw and neck. Symptoms may appear after the injury, so feeling well immediately does not replace prevention.

Wash your hands, rinse the cut under clean running water, and gently remove visible dirt if it comes away easily. Apply pressure for bleeding and cover the wound with a clean dressing. Do not pour harsh chemicals into deep tissue or close a dirty puncture yourself. Contact a healthcare professional promptly with the date and type of your last tetanus vaccination, if known. The clinician may clean the wound further and recommend vaccination based on the injury and your history.

Get urgent care for a deep puncture, embedded metal, uncontrolled bleeding, loss of feeling or movement, severe pain, or signs of infection such as spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or fever. Seek emergency help for jaw stiffness, trouble swallowing, muscle spasms, or breathing difficulty. These symptoms need immediate assessment.
